A gun believed to be used in a December murder in Pike County was recently located by a gun powder-sniffing K-9.
Ohio Department of Wildlife Officer Chris Gilkey and his K-9 partner, Mattis assisted the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in finding the firearm that was hidden in the woods in Pike County just a few weeks ago.
The firearm is believed to have been used by 32-year-old Jon-Erik Burggraf to murder 39-year-old Charles Meadows, Jr. in December.
The state said the gun was hidden for 10 days after BCI requested the dog’s assistance. It was thrown there after Burggraf fled the scene on foot.
“….Ohio Division of Wildlife K-9’s are trained to detect items containing raw or burnt gun powder,” the Division of Wildlife said in a release. “At the scene it took Mattis only 10 minutes to sniff out the firearm, which was well hidden under a rock and still loaded.”
Burggraf led law enforcement on a multi-day manhunt after fleeing in the woods in Pike County. He was caught in the woods in Ross County a few days after the murder.
