LONDONDERRY, Ohio — Two firefighters were not injured after their engine was involved in a crash tied to a drunken driver.
It happened at around 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning In Londonderry.
Members of Harrison Township Fire and EMS were responding to another crash on route 50 at Vigo Road. That’s when the fire engine collided with a Buick sedan near the scene. No one was hurt in either crashes, but the fire department said the Buick pulled out in front of them.
The engine came close to overturning, but the Lieutenant behind the wheel was able to guide the 60,000 pound apparatus to prevent a tipping. The rear wheels, however, were off the pavement when tow crews arrived.
The man in the sedan was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
The township’s fire chief, Kevin Harper said that the truck will be out-of-service for an extended period, but that the department has a second engine that will be become primary.
The woman in the first crash — a blue SUV — was given a field sobriety test. Troopers reported that she slammed into a concrete barrier in the ditch, causing her car’s engine to push into the inside of the vehicle. Her SUV was demolished upon impact. She was detained and taken to the county jail for further OVI testing and was charged with driving under the influence.
Route 50 was closed as crews cleaned up the crash.
