COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the New Year’s holiday weekend approaches, the Ohio Highway Patrol is reminding residents to drive sober or use a designated driver to prevent tragic accidents on the state’s roads. In order to enforce this message, the patrol will be increasing its presence on Ohio roadways in order to keep drivers safe and reduce the number of crashes.
Last year, 12 people were killed in 12 crashes on Ohio roadways during the holiday weekend, with half of those crashes being OVI (operating a vehicle under the influence) related. This year, the Ohio Highway Patrol is determined to prevent similar tragedies from occurring and is urging all drivers to make responsible decisions behind the wheel.
In addition to increasing patrols, the Ohio Highway Patrol is also reminding drivers to buckle up, slow down, and avoid distracted driving. By following these simple safety measures, motorists can help keep themselves and others safe on the roads this holiday weekend.
