PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — A recent study by injury lawyers Bader Scott has identified the most perilous counties for weekend driving in the United States. The analysis, based on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data from 2017 to 2021, focused on counties with at least 50 fatal accidents during weekends.
Pickaway County, Ohio, takes the dubious honor of being the riskiest place to drive during weekends. Despite having the lowest overall crash total among the top ten, Pickaway County stands out with a staggering 56.86% of all fatal crashes occurring on Saturdays and Sundays. With 29 fatal accidents out of a total of 51, residents and commuters are urged to exercise extra caution during these critical hours.
Closely trailing behind, Vigo County, Indiana, claims second place with 56.14% of fatal crashes happening on weekends. The area witnessed a total of 57 fatal accidents during the study period, with 32 occurring over Saturdays and Sundays.
In third position, San Benito County, California, recorded 29 weekend fatal accidents out of 52, resulting in a 55.77% weekend fatality rate.
Other counties making the list include:
- Grimes, Texas, where 55.56% of deadly crashes occur during weekends.
- Madison, Mississippi, rounding out the top five with 55.38% of weekend fatal crashes.
The study serves as a stark reminder to drivers across the nation: weekends demand heightened vigilance on the roads. Whether it’s a leisurely drive or essential travel, safety should always be the top priority.
Note: The study considered only fatal crashes that occurred during weekends, excluding weekdays.
