COLUMBUS, Ohio —– This April, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Liquor Control (DOLC) is urging residents to take a moment and consider their relationship with alcohol. “Check In On Yourself” is the message for Alcohol Awareness Month, encouraging Ohioans to assess how alcohol consumption may be impacting their overall health and well-being.
Statistics show a concerning trend, with over 6,750 Ohioans losing their lives annually due to excessive drinking. Additionally, binge drinking is more prevalent in Ohio compared to the national average, with roughly 20% of adults reporting such behavior.
The DOLC, along with its partner OHLQ (Ohio Liquor Control Commission), plays a crucial role in promoting responsible alcohol consumption in the state. They manage the sale and distribution of alcohol through licensing manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. Furthermore, they offer resources and activities aimed at reducing the harms associated with alcohol abuse.
One such resource is a partnership with Responsibility.org, a national organization dedicated to reducing alcohol abuse. Their website provides tools to start conversations about alcohol, information on ridesharing services, and guidance on underage drinking and overconsumption. This information is readily available on OHLQ’s website and social media platforms.
Recognizing the importance of early intervention, the DOLC also connects parents with resources to have open discussions with their children about underage drinking. Statistics show that underage drinking is also a concern, with 13% of Ohio high schoolers reported as binge drinkers compared to the national average of 11%.
For those battling addiction or needing guidance on responsible drinking habits, the DOLC provides a list of resources, including treatment options, support groups, and helplines.
By encouraging self-reflection and providing access to valuable resources, the DOLC and OHLQ hope to promote a culture of responsible alcohol consumption in Ohio.
