ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — The Athens County Sheriff’s Office has launched a high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative that will run through June 30, targeting speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and seatbelt violations across county roads, streets, and highways.
The effort is being conducted in coordination with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, and surrounding jurisdictions. Drivers can expect an increased law enforcement presence throughout the month.
Sheriff Rodney Smith is reminding drivers of key safety practices ahead of the summer holiday season. Seatbelt use is the top priority — the sheriff’s office notes that wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 45 percent. Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving are also targeted under the initiative.
The sheriff’s office said it will show zero tolerance for impaired drivers, urging anyone who has consumed alcohol to designate a sober driver or use public transportation rather than getting behind the wheel.
