COLUMBUS, Ohio — Southwest Airlines will end its free checked bag policy for many customers on flights booked or changed on or after May 28, 2025, and announced new fare bundles to be introduced in the third quarter of 2025.
The Dallas-based airline’s new fare options—Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, and Choice—replace Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away Plus, respectively. Choice Extra, the most expensive bundle, includes two free checked bags, early boarding, extra legroom, free internet, and a premium drink. Bag fees will apply to Basic, Wanna Get Away, and Anytime fares, though costs were not disclosed; most airlines charge $25 to $50 per bag.
Southwest cardmembers will receive a free first checked bag for up to eight passengers on the same booking. Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and Choice Extra (formerly Business Select) ticket holders will also get two free checked bags. One carry-on bag and a personal item remain free for all passengers.
The changes coincide with Southwest’s decision last week to reduce its flight schedule in the second half of 2025 due to lower demand. Major U.S. airlines, including Southwest, are revising profit outlooks, with some withdrawing financial guidance.
