COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a move that has sparked controversy and deepened partisan divides, Ohio Republicans have introduced a bill to rename Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland, Ohio, after former President Donald J. Trump. The proposed legislation, House Bill 651, has been put forward by Republican Representative Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta), drawing praise from Trump loyalists and criticism from those on the opposite side of the aisle.
Representative Loychik, a staunch Trump supporter, lauded the former president’s efforts both during and after his time in office. “President Trump has worked tirelessly not just for the people of Trumbull and Ashtabula counties in District 65 but for all Ohioans and all Americans,” Loychik said in a statement, pointing to Trump’s recent public appearances as evidence of his ongoing influence. He added that Trump embodies the qualities of a “brave, fearless” leader who puts America first, making him deserving of this honor.
However, the bill has ignited debate across the state, with critics arguing that it is a politically motivated attempt to honor a divisive figure.
Democrats and progressive activists have voiced strong opposition to the bill, suggesting that renaming a state park after Trump is not only unnecessary but also an affront to the values of inclusivity and unity that state parks are meant to represent. They argue that Ohio’s natural spaces should be free from partisan politics and remain accessible and welcoming to all residents, regardless of their political views.
As the bill moves forward, it is expected to face debate, with the outcome likely reflecting the sharp partisan divisions that have come to define Ohio politics.
